Black Mold: What You Need to Know

Black mold is a type of fungus that thrives in areas that are moist and humid and dark.  Apparently, it does not need a lot to grow and germinate, as long as there’s humidity and moisture.  The black mold or the stachybotrys chartarum devours on moist materials that are fibrous in consistency and appears as a black infestation.  It can be found in any parts of your home where there is moisture especially in areas that are built out of cellulose materials such as papers, fiberboard, and woods.

Black molds are viewed as health hazards as they produce spores that contain mycotoxins.  Prolonged exposure and inhalation of these spores that contains the mycotoxins could lead to death of an individual.  The mycotoxins are not released into the air until the time the black mold is totally dried out.  Once in the air, these hazardous toxins are spread in all areas of the house through the ventilation and air-conditioning systems increasing the likelihood of inhalation of these toxins by the humans and household pets.  If inhaled by individuals with lowered immune resistance like the infants, the mycotoxins can cause respiratory illnesses like respiratory tract infections and bleeding leading to death.

Unlike any other types of molds that have musty like odors, the black mold is very hard to detect since it doesn’t have a distinctive smell of its own.  And usually, it lurks in areas that are hard to reach and mostly unseen by the naked eye such as the back of the walls and under the ceilings making most homeowners unaware of its presence.  However, any sign of leaks in the plumbing system or roof and dysfunctional gutters could already be a concern for possible black mold growth in your household or if you or any members of the family have started to develop allergic reactions even without the medical history of such illness.  The presence of black mold could also be known if your child who has asthma is experiencing exacerbations inspite of the compliance to medication and regular check-ups. Basement Rock Band

Not the video game.  At some point in their life, every person wants to be a rock star. High school garage bands, mid-life crisis jam sessions in the basement, these are things that go on all around us. In this day and age, anyone who desires to, can rock out.  A musical outlet can be emotionally satisfying and often can lead to chances to make some money.  So, here’s how it goes:
Home grown bands tend to be the brainchild of one or two people. They have the idea that they want to put their musical skills to use and start putting out feelers to other musicians. They talk to friends at school, work, church: “Hey, I heard you play…” Usually there will be some form of auditions held for other members of the band, and when the founder(s) is happy with the lineup, thoughts turn to music. Will it be a cover band? Originals, written by band members, or a mix of the two?  It’s important to determine the styles and flavors of the music that will be written and played.  
The next chapter of band progression is practice, practice, practice. Everybody has things to do, and working band practice around everybody’s schedules can be frustrating.  Practice makes perfect, regardless of whether the band is for therapy only or it will actually be playing gigs. If the band’s got a date to play, step up practices so that everybody’s more than ready to perform.  
Taking notes is very important for all members of the band. The drums come in after the verse. The guitarist’s solo doesn’t end until after that measure. There’s a key change, heads up.  Keep a pencil and paper nearby to jot reminders, or better yet, put up one or two glass whiteboards in the practice area. Use it to write general notes or the music of a difficult part everyone’s trying to nail down.
After a while, the band’s going to sound good. It a satisfying feeling, the first time a song finishes and each member of the band thinks “Hey that was pretty good.”  All that practice pays off. So keep going strong, and play lots and lots. Then the neighbor is going to want to come over and listen, and then friends come and they pass it on and soon the mailman’s uncle is asking for the band to play at his daughter’s wedding.  Stardom awaits.
The focal point of playing in a group is enjoying it. Practice hard, be seriously about playing, but have fun. A good band needs a healthy balance of buckle-down-and-work and kick-back-and-laugh.  Don’t let drama interfere. Write funny quotes and inside jokes on those glass whiteboards around the corners of serious notes. If no one ever hears of the band, it won’t change the fact that for three minutes and twenty-three seconds, you are a great musician.  Plus, your family will be able to say “We have a rock star in our basement.”

The Racing Horse Of Renown: Affirmed

In the crazy world of horse racing the one thing we had yet to see going into the 1978 horse racing year was back to back triple crown winners.  That was about to all change because of a horse by the name of Affirmed.  

Not only had there never been back to back triple crown winners but no horse ever had to beat the same rival in all three legs of the triple crown.  So 1978 was indeed special all the way around.  Because during this amazing year Affirmed and Alydar gave racing fans all over the world the thrill of a lifetime.  By the time the last leg of the triple crown at Belmont was run, Affirmed was a triple crown winner but it was Alydar that got everyone’s sympathy and was the hero of the year.  

The truth is, the Affirmed – Alydar rivalry started long before they ever got to the Kentucky Derby, the first leg of the crown.  On June 15, 1977, was when it all started at Belmont Park.  The two horses were running in the Youthful Stakes.  It was Alydar’s first race and Affirmed’s second.  Affirmed won the race while Alydar finished a disappointing fourth.  In was the only time in ten meetings between these two horses that they both didn’t finish first or second.  

Affirmed came into the world on February 21, 1975.  He was born at Harbor View Farm in Florida.  The owner, Louis Wolfson, had sent other horses out to race in his career but never with the success that was about to come with Affirmed.  

Affirmed made his maiden race on May 24, 1977, at Belmont Park.  He won the race by an easy 4 and 1/2 lengths.  Three weeks later was when he won the Youthful with Alydar coming in fourth.  But after that race, Affirmed and Alydar ran every race almost neck and neck in one of the greatest rivalries of all time.  

On July 6 at the Great American Stakes, Alydar finally got the better of Affirmed and beat him winning by 3 and 1/2 lengths.  This didn’t discourage trainer Lazaro Barrera who then immediately shipped Affirmed out to Hollywood Park where he won the Hollywood Juvenile Championship on July 23.  This was the first of four straight victories for Affirmed.   

There were other races afterwards, with Affirmed and Alydar trading victories.  This set up the first leg of the triple crown, the Kentucky Derby.  Ironically, this turned out to be the least exciting race of the three with Affirmed taking a commanding lead.  At the end, Alydar could only close the gap to 1 1/2 lengths though he gave it a valiant effort.  

It was a different story two weeks later at the Preakness where the two horses were engaged in an epic duel.  Affirmed again took an early lead but this time Alydar made it a race with Affirmed winning only by a neck.  

But as good as the Preakness was, the Belmont Stakes will go down in history as being one of the most exciting races in history.  For almost the entire race in a five horse field, Affirmed and Alydar were running neck and neck.  It was like out of a movie.  Finally though it was Affirmed who won the race by a head.  

This was indeed one of the greatest horse rivalries in racing history, one which may never be duplicated.
